  • Two hours south of Cleveland, off a rock street in rustic Coshocton County, sits a refined hotel housed in an about 200-year-old log lodge.

The log lodge, which dates to 1831, sat untouched on the property for about 20 years, while Lee and Joy Wyse rehabbed the area and set up their winery, which opened in 1988.

The informal lodging opened in 2007 with four rooms sitting above Rainbow’s 50 sections of land of picturesque, bumpy area. The 3,000-square-foot expansion to the lodge was constructed to a limited extent with wood, oak and cinder generally, from the property. Contemporary craftsmanship enlivens the dividers, including vivid glass workmanship windows Joy outlined.

A vast, advanced kitchen permits Joy to offer what has turn into an upscale cookout each Friday and Saturday, June through September. Most nighttimes the barbecues draw in more than 100 cafes, who accumulate on multileveled decks disregarding the property. Visitors barbecue their steaks, while Joy and her staff serve the backups.

Come November, she’ll start offering more cozy wine sampling/supper parties, a four-course feast for up to 35 visitors in the winery’s tasting room. “The menu is my decision,” she said. “No one truly realizes what they’re getting until they take a seat.”

The dinners she gets ready in the morning for her overnight visitors incorporate egg goulashes, quiches and stuffed French toast.

Inside the winery – another straightforward, natural space – 10 wines are offered, including the smooth, not very sweet Spectrum, a mix of traminette and vidal best served at room temperature.

Lee Wyse, Rainbow Hills’ boss winemaker and a pioneer in Ohio’s winemaking renaissance, passed away in right on time May. Dave Bachelder, his long-term student, has assumed control winemaking obligations.

Room prices at the motel are $165-$175. Rainbow Hills Vineyards and Bed and Breakfast, at 26349 Township Road 251, is only north of Newcomerstown off Ohio 751. For any query and information, please call: 740-545-9305
